St Helier Phillip Peard

25/3/1844-14/5/1913

This is actually St Helier's older brother William Henry Peard. Circa 1860
St Helier was born at Saint Helier in Jersey, Channel Islands.  Hence his name, St Helier but he was affectionally known as 'Sainty.'   His father Henry Hawke belonged to the class of landed gentry in Ireland, his father being Richard Peard esq.   His mother Elizabeth Cathrow, was English but also from landed gentry, her father was George Cathrow esq.    On St Helier's birth registration, his father's occupation is listed as 'gentleman.'   Interestingly Henry Hawke is recorded as a proxy for Rev Charles Turner  and his brother Richard Peard is listed as a proxy for  Rev Philip Berry.  Anne Mary Peard is recorded as a sponsor.  I surmise that this is because they were Irish and not citizens of Jersey.

St Helier was the youngest of twelve children born to Elizabeth and Henry Hawke.  The children were Elizabeth Kathryn, Richard McCullough,  William Henry, Anne Mary, Marion Cotton, Alberta Disney, George Spotwood, Henry Turner, Emma Fanny, Charles Harte and Augusta Maria (who died at 9 months old).   Sainty was one when the famine took hold in Ireland.  Along with most landed gentry, the Peard family were responsible in many ways for cruelty to the starving Catholic tenants. See HENRY HAWKE PEARD for detail regarding this.

Sainty's mother gave birth to another baby, Alice Cathrow, and passed away two months later.  That baby did not survive.  Henry Hawke died in 1858, leaving his entire estate to the first son Richard McCullough as was the tradition.  The other children had to make their own way in the world.  Women were restricted to marrying well.   Three of them at least married; Elizabeth (Campion), Anne Mary (Briand) and Emma Fanny (Walpole); Elizabeth Kathryn, Anne Mary, Marion Cotton, Alberta Disney and Emma Fanny.  Marion and Alberta are a mystery.   As is typical in history the male's life trajectories are full of detail.   William Henry migrated to Australia in 1852 as a 21 year old gent and established himself in the Oxley area in Victoria.   Charles Harte and Henry Turner also went to the Oxley area.  George Spotwood joined the Royal Navy but died at sea.  See  the fabulous article written by Lenore Frost which gives a lot of detail about the four brothers (although it doesn't mention St Helier who also made his way there )      timetravellers.pbworks.com/w/page/108173315/Edith-Peard

From St Helier's obituary it is apparent that he initially came and went from Australia three times, eventually marrying Annie Winifred Garde in Ireland, then returning  in 1871 for good.  Initially they took up sheep and wheat farming in Victoria (near his three brothers) but moved on going initially to Albury, (where William Henry had cattle) and then settling in Lismore where they purchased a house, 'Glenmore' on Dibbs Street. They had six children together. Louisa Alice, Ernest St Helier,  Mabel Minnie, Florence Victoria, Percy Garde and Laura Lily.  Louisa Alice, Florence and Percy became teachers , only Percy managing to have a fully fledged teaching career (both Louisa and Florence had to stop when they married).  Ernest became an accountant.  All of the children married except Laura.  Louisa to Harold Carter, Ernest to Margaret Skuthorpe, Mabel to Ted Rohan, Florence to Charles Dunlop and Percy to Ada Grisdale.  Laura Lily seems to have remained at home and gone onto care for her mother once her father had died.   Nothing else is known of Annie Garde's life beyond being  a wife and mother.

St Helier became engaged in civil life, becoming the first Town Clerk of Lismore. He also acquired property.  There are records of court hearings regarding unpaid rent.    It seems he was well respected in the community, going by newspaper reports of the day.  His funeral was extremely well attended by  businessmen, farmers and townsfolk.
St Helier died in May 1913 after suffering two strokes.   Annie lived for another 11 years, dying in 1924.   Below are are three attachments.  The 1901 census shows the Peards living at Dibbs St.  Of particular interest is that several Chinese persons are listed in Dibbs St also.   There is St Helier's obituary, and Annie Garde's funeral notice.
